Compare HVAC Installation Quotes Beyond the Equipment Price
Look at system selection, installation work, commissioning and the support included after installation.

Start with the home's needs
Tell each contractor about comfort problems, planned renovations and rooms that are hard to heat or cool. Ask how the proposed system was selected for the home. ENERGY STAR's contractor guidance emphasizes evaluating the home rather than choosing equipment solely from the old unit's size.
Give every bidder the same information. A quote based on a site assessment is easier to evaluate than an equipment price that leaves installation conditions unresolved.
Put the whole installation on one page
Ask who is responsible for permits and inspections where required. Identify exclusions and provisional allowances. If one quote includes changes to distribution or controls, compare those differences explicitly rather than treating both offers as the same system.
- Equipment: manufacturer, model and included controls.
- Related work: duct modifications, electrical work, drainage and supports.
- Project logistics: removal, protection of the home and expected downtime.
- Completion: startup, testing, documentation and owner orientation.
Understand the support arrangement
Separate equipment warranty terms from the installer's labor coverage. Ask what registration or maintenance documentation is required and who handles a service request. Financing terms, maintenance plans and optional accessories should be readable as separate decisions.
At handoff, request model and serial information, operating instructions and a record of the completed checks. Confirm that the originally reported comfort concerns were discussed. Keep any unresolved items and their next appointment in writing.
