Describe what changed

Tell the company whether the door will not open, stops partway, moves unevenly or makes a new sound. Note whether the wall control and remote behave differently. A photo from a safe position may help explain the situation. Do not attempt to adjust springs or cables to prepare for the visit.

Ask whether a vehicle is trapped and whether the door can remain safely unused until the appointment. Let the service team advise you about access; do not force a door that appears damaged.

Separate the visit from the repair

An opener issue and a door hardware issue can require different work. Ask for an explanation connecting the observed problem with the proposed repair. If replacement of several components is recommended, ask which items address the current fault and which are optional improvements.

  • What is the service-call or diagnostic fee?
  • Does that fee apply toward work you approve?
  • Will the technician explain the failed component and proposed replacement?
  • Are labor, parts, removal and final checks included in the written price?

Ask for a usable handoff

Before the technician leaves, request an explanation of normal operation, manufacturer-recommended checks and the contact for a recurring problem. CPSC provides consumer information about automatic garage-door operators and entrapment protection. Ask the technician to demonstrate the relevant safety features according to the equipment instructions.

Keep the invoice, installed part information and written warranty terms together. Record any follow-up work separately so “recommended” is not confused with “completed.”
