An Interior Painting Estimate Checklist
Compare surface preparation, products, included areas and room access before choosing a painting proposal.

Mark the surfaces included
Walk through each room and identify walls, ceilings, doors, trim, closets and built-ins. Mark anything excluded. A room count alone does not describe the amount of painting or preparation.
Tell the painter about peeling areas, stains, previous repairs and finishes you want to change. Ask the professional to assess the cause of a surface problem before treating it as a purely cosmetic issue.
Compare preparation and materials
Ask who supplies materials and whether repairs beyond the listed preparation require a new price. “Two coats” is not a complete description without the surface condition and intended result.
- Furniture movement and protection of floors and belongings.
- Surface cleaning, patching, sanding and caulking where appropriate.
- Primer requirements and the proposed paint product and sheen.
- Color selection, samples and how coverage will be achieved.
- Cleanup, disposal and handling of remaining paint.
Plan around the home's age and use
For work disturbing painted surfaces in a pre-1978 U.S. home, EPA recommends using a lead-safe certified contractor. Raise the property's age before work is priced so the appropriate assessment and work practices can be discussed.
Ask about ventilation, room access and the product manufacturer's drying or re-entry guidance. Agree on which rooms remain usable and how pets and belongings will be kept away from work areas.
Define the walkthrough
Arrange a final review under ordinary room lighting. Record any touch-ups and a completion date, and keep the product names, colors and sheens for future maintenance. A clear handoff is more useful than trying to remember a color from a photograph months later.
