How to Request Access to an Existing Business Profile
Recover the correct profile through ownership requests, document the handoff, and keep the business owner in control of account access.

A profile managed by a former employee or agency is an access problem to solve carefully. Creating a second profile can leave customers facing two versions of the same business. Start by identifying the existing listing and the account that should own it.
Confirm that you have the correct business
Record the public Maps link, business name, address or coverage, phone, and website. Check that the listing is not another branch with a similar name. Ask the owner to check their own Google accounts before requesting access; sometimes the missing profile is simply under a different account.
Prepare a business-controlled account for long-term ownership. Team members and agencies should use individual authorized access instead of sharing the owner's password. This makes future handoffs easier to document.
Choose the appropriate request route
Google provides a request-access process for an existing verified storefront or hybrid profile. Its guidance directs service-area businesses without a physical customer-facing location to contact support for an ownership transfer. Use the route matching the business. The current guidance gives the existing owner three days to respond, but a subsequent claim option is not guaranteed. Ownership request instructions.
If you know the existing manager, send a concise request identifying the exact profile and the business-controlled account that needs access. State whether you need management access or a transfer of primary ownership. These are different actions, so avoid treating an invitation as a completed ownership transfer.
Keep a handoff record
Use a small record with the profile link, requested role, requesting account, date submitted, confirmation email, and current status. Store it in the business's own operating files. Do not include passwords or verification codes in a shared task description.
When approved, confirm the new account can open the intended profile and inspect People and access. Verify the actual role shown. Google places limits on certain actions for newly added owners and managers, so account for those rules before scheduling a final handoff. Access roles and limitations.
Finish the transition deliberately
Check whether the previous agency also controls the website, review links, reporting exports, or other assets. Profile access does not automatically transfer those services. Agree on separate responsibilities and dates so nobody assumes a broader handoff occurred.
Remove access only after the authorized owner confirms the transition and no legitimate management need remains. Keep at least the intended business owner securely in control.
Frequently asked questions
### Should I create another profile while waiting? Do not create a duplicate to work around access. Follow the ownership route for the existing business.
### Does no response mean automatic ownership? No. Review the request status and available next steps; Google's claim option is not always available.
### What can an agency do without the owner's password? It can receive its own authorized management invitation and help track the transfer. Password sharing is unnecessary for that workflow.
