A Homeowner’s Checklist for a Tree Service Estimate
Identify the tree, the proposed work and what happens to branches, wood and the surrounding property.

Name the tree and the objective
Photograph the whole tree and describe its location: for example, the large tree beside the rear driveway. Explain your concern without choosing a treatment in advance. You may want clearance over a roof, an assessment of damaged branches or advice about the tree's condition.
Ask who will assess the tree and which professional credentials are relevant. The International Society of Arboriculture's TreesAreGood site explains arborist selection and provides a credential-search tool. Verify a claimed credential through its issuer rather than relying on a logo in a quote.
Define the work and the site plan
“Remove tree” may leave a stump, logs or chips unless the scope says otherwise. Agree on what the property should look like when the crew leaves. Ask how weather, access restrictions and applicable permits affect scheduling.
- Which tree or branches does the estimate cover?
- What is the purpose of the proposed pruning or removal?
- How will equipment reach the work area?
- Who protects nearby fencing, irrigation, paving and plants?
- Are stump work, wood removal and final cleanup included?
Check the handoff before accepting
Request insurance information and independently confirm the coverage relevant to the proposed work. Ask how additional work discovered on site will be approved. Keep the tree identification and written scope with the final invoice.
For a tree near utility lines, tell the company before booking and follow the utility's guidance. Avoid climbing or cutting branches yourself to help the crew prepare.
