Compare Moving Quotes with the Same Inventory
Use one inventory and access checklist to make hourly, flat-rate and additional-service estimates easier to compare.

Build one inventory for every mover
List rooms, large furniture, approximate box counts and items needing special handling. Include storage units, patios and garages. Send corrections to every company when the inventory changes; otherwise you will compare different jobs.
Describe stairs, elevators, parking, loading distance and building reservation requirements at both addresses. Access conditions can matter as much as the number of rooms.
Ask what the pricing method includes
For an hourly quote, ask about the crew size, minimum time, travel charges, start and stop points for the clock, and how additional time is approved. For a fixed proposal, ask exactly which inventory and services the price covers.
Get exclusions and cancellation terms in writing rather than relying on a verbal total.
- Packing and unpacking.
- Boxes and protective materials.
- Furniture disassembly and reassembly.
- Specialty items and extra stops.
- Storage, waiting time and building access charges.
Identify the business taking responsibility
Ask whether you are speaking to the carrier that will perform the move or a broker arranging it. For an interstate household-goods move, FMCSA provides registration and complaint information through its mover search. Requirements for moves within one state vary, so check the relevant state authority.
Discuss protection before moving day
Ask the mover to explain the valuation or liability options, their cost and the claim procedure. Do not assume that the word “insured” describes the protection available for every item.
Before loading, keep the agreed inventory, estimate and contact details accessible. Confirm changes in writing. The best comparison is the price of the same move under clearly understood terms.
